We have not been very successful with measuring the shadows during the day due to the lack of sunshine, so I have sent students a few videos to watch in their gmail.

Monday, December 9, 2019

Thank you to all who made the time to see me for interviews. It is always appreciated to be on the same page as parents and to know what everyone's expectations are.

Learning this week:

FLA: we are almost done the novel study. It will be due before holidays. Today students were told about a project to go with it, researching a monster/myth or making a WANTED poster for Big Foot. Once again, very few had read chapter 4 for discussion today. To date, students should have vocab and summaries for up to chpater 4, a letter and a title page.

ELA: students received their marks for Greek research. Today we went on a prefix hunt and for the remainder of the time before holidays, we will work on Reader's Theater. Acting using only the voice.

MATH: today we learned how to divide decimals. Practice is necessary to get better at it, and again, some students still need practice with multiplication tables.

SCIENCE: we will finish up the unit shortly. I expect the exam to be after the holidays, depending on how many disruptions we get in the next while.

SOCIAL: we look at the way Athens government was structured. Again, I expect the exam to be after the holidays.

RELIGION: We will finish our Advent magazine and have it ready to showcase for the open house next week.

ART: optical illusions will be due at the end of this week, if not done already. We will do a Christmas ornament this week. Sketchbooks; we are working on texture. Will be due after Christmas.

This week;
I hope to walk the neighbourhood this Tuesday and Wednesday.. So very few students handed in their premission slips, so as of tomorrow, no slip, no spreading joy.

Also due today was the sheet on height and weight for skiing. Not everyone handed theirs in.

Mission Mexico: bring a toonie for Thursday

Open House info: Escape room
For fun, I have planned several activities around our curriculum at several stations. When you have had enough, you can see me for lock puzzle. Solve it in order to be able to leave. Our performance with Mme Berko is at the end of the evening at around 7h25 - 7h30. Hope to see you there.

SOCIAL: we will break out into groups to put together the information for the debates. I will assign topics and FOR or AGAINST. Still waiting for all Social tests to returned signed.

I am finding that students in this class seem to think that homework is an option...
English stories were due last Friday and I am still missing 2. French comic books were due Monday of this week and I am still missing 7. Today we were correcting ELA comprehension questions of the novel study and I noticed several students without answers. Please take the time to speak to your children about the importance of handing in assignments. Without them, I am not able to do progress reports and let you know where your children are in terms of their learning. I cannot assess what I do not see.

As part of our Religion program, students are asked to take on Social Justice projects to demonstrate how we can be more like Christ in helping the less fortunate. This coming month, we will be organizing 2 drives:
1. A food drive for St Luke's Feed the Hungry. This will run from now until October 9th when they pick up the food in the morning. Each grade has their own list of Food items.
Image result for food drive
2. Pass it along clothing. Mme Wozny has been asking for donations of clothing for a while now. Take a look in your closets for any clothes that are no longer needed. Send in clean clothes that are still in good condition to the school. Grade sixers will sort them on October 16th.

Thank you for your generosity in both of these worthwhile leadership activities.

It’s the last week of September, how did we get here already?
My name is Mme. Reimer, and I am a student teacher in Mme. Colette’s class.  This is my last full week here until January, however, I will be doing a bi-weekly visit to keep up with the students and their learning.
Important things to note:
  • Thursday, September 26 is our theme day.  Students should come to school dressed in a beach/Hawaiian theme, please note that swimsuits are not allowed.
  • Friday, September 27 is our opening Mass.  We will be walking to the church, so please ensure that students are dressed for the weather. We are still in need of a volunteer.
  • Monday, September 30, we will be having our Terry Fox run.  There will be a permission form sent home to go outside for the run.  Please bring in a TOONIE for Terry with the signed form before Monday.
  • Monday, September 30, students are encouraged to wear orange for Orange Shirt Day to promote awareness about the residential school system and the impact this hahad on the Indigenous communities around Canada.
This week in learning:
MATH: Students were given their corrected Fiche 3 today.  Some students were given a redo if they didn’t understand or if they seemed to have rushed through their work.  These assignments are used to inform us what they understand/what they didn’t understand so that we can prepare them for the summative assessments.  Fiche 3 is due tomorrow September 25.  Fiche 4 was also given today and is due Thursday, September 26. We will be continuing with factors this week and they will be given class time to work on Fiche 5, due Thursday, September 26.  The students will have their first quiz in math Wednesday, October 3, covering lessons 1-5.  The corrected fiche assignments and questions from the book are great study tools to prepare for the quiz. There are several students not completing their homework questions from the book.  These questions are important for the students to complete to enhance their learning.

ELA: The “Secret life story that students have been working on for quite some time is due this Friday, September 27.  Today is their last period of class time to work on it as we are starting a novel study Thursday.  We will also be looking at different figures of speech throughout the next few weeks.

FLA: The comic book that students have been creating is due Monday, September 30 and we will be starting expressions using the verbs AVOIR et ÊTRE.  Students will have a quiz on comic book vocabulary, Monday, September 30.

SCIENCE: We will be continuing with the unit on research and proof, focusing on fingerprints and tire marks.

ÉTUDE SOCIALES: This week, we will be talking about the student elections and narrowing in on how to differentiate between facts and opinions.

RELIGION: This week, we will be talking about knowing God through scripture.  Friday, we will be attending and participating in the opening mass.

ART: Last week we began working on an onomatopoeia piece where the students were to make a cartoon looking word.  We will be finishing that piece this week.

SANTÉ: Last week, Mme. Colette posted a photo of questions on the board that were to be answered for homework.  These questions are due Monday, September 30, in the health basket near the back of the class.

We have a busy week with a lot of work due on Friday!  Please keep up with the blog to stay ahead of the due dates.
