Shhhh! Wrapping presents for some special people...

Monday, December 14, 2015

The last week before holidays always seems to be the longest!  Please remind your little ones that school is still "on" and we still have work to do before we rest. In that regard, there will be evaluations this week; in français there will be vocabulary (vetements et Noel) and one for listening to instructions.
In Math there will be one showing one more than/one less than and a pre-addition quiz. Thank you for your help in keeping the kids on track.
My apologies for the Friday pizza day mix-up. One calendar said there was pizza day and thank goodness you all sent lunches for the kids...only Mme Colette did not have a lunch!
Thursday is pyjama day and in the afternoon we will be having hot cocoa and a film. Is anyone willing to come and help out? 1pm if you are available, please email me.
Bonne semaine

WOW! I am so proud of our little class and the great job they did at the concert last night. Everyone looked "beau et belle" and sang with love and compassion. The true meaning of Christmas. Félicitations!

A HUGE thank you to Ruhaan's mom for purchasing the gifts for our hamper family. If you have not brought in your food items, please do so by Friday or let me know if it will be a problem.

Another MERCI to the secret santas who bought books from the Book Fair for our classroom. They are very much appreciated and I am looking forward to reading them with the children.

We will not be having another library period before the holidays. The Learning Commons is closed (there is a Star Lab in there right now, that I am hoping we can visit with the grade 6s). In that regard, please have your child return their books before the break so that they do not get lost over the holidays. Thank you for your help.

Thank you to Valentina's mom who found this great website which speaks to your child and includes all kinds of neat information, from numbers to greetings. It may also be of benefit to you, the parents, for helping you learn French as well! Have fun

Where do I begin for this week?
First of all tomorrow night's concert, a gentle reminder Sunday best and arrive no later than 6:15 in the classroom. Merci...
and wish us luck!

Everyone brought back or sold the WESTJET tickets so that means...Freezie party! No pizza but I am super proud of everyone...one less thing to worry about.

Food hamper items are coming in nicely; again a BIG thank you. No one has stepped forward to buy a gift for the family. (any takers? please email me asap. Merci) All items need to be handed in by THIS Friday as they go out next week.

Speaking of Friday, it is pizza day but there is no theme day as that will be done next Thursday the 17th...pyjama day.
As always...read, read, read...en français! Syllables were sent home to those had asked for them at interviews, so check agendas and if they did not make it home, ask your child where they disappeared to.
Bonne semaine

voici le vocabulaire de Noel
We are so BLESSED...please help.
We have been given a hamper to fill for a family of 3. I will be assigning items of food for your children to bring to help fill the hamper, but any donation is gratefully accepted. I am also asking for donations of money as we have also been asked to buy gifts for these people.  I would need a parent or two to purchase gifts for a 6 year old girl, a 3 month old boy and a mother by the deadline date of December of 14th. This project will be a big part of our Advent preparation. Let us walk humbly and help those in need. MERCI

This week in Mme Colette's class:

Thank you all for coming to Parent-Teacher conferences. It was great to see you all again.  I hope that Jeremy and Neomie are feeling better.
French vocabulary this week: Noel
Science: construction d'un meuble (piece of furniture with tinfoil)
Etudes Sociales: Moi dans ma ville
Math: addition and beginning of subtraction, plus an evaluation on number sense (we have done a lot of practice in class so no worries)
Religion: Beginning of Advent and adopting a family

The biggest thing is the Christmas concert which is already next week. Please help by having your child practice the song a few times per night. Link on previous blog.

Nous commençons les sons!
In French we are learning the sound "CH", which in French sounds like the "SH" sound in English.  Here are a few words to practice with your child:
chapeau               chemise           chandail        roche
riche                    poche              chemin          pêche

A reminder that students should be reading each night, returning and exchanging their books in the morning. I have heard everyone read to date and some are making progress. Woohoo!

Ecole St Luke! I am trying to train the children to put their mitts and tuques in their coat sleeve after recesses to avoid losing them. Please remind them of this or use safety pins to keep them attached. With the cold weather coming and staying, we don't want frozen fingers.

Here is a link to the song we will be singing for the Christmas concert:

If your child can practice every once in a while, it would be of great benefit. On the night of the concert pretend you've never heard it before!
And finally, if you are not planning on selling the West Jet tickets that were in the report cards, please return them asap as other children have expressed an interest in selling more. MERCI

There were 5 Mme Colette imposters in our classroom on Friday. Does anyone recognize these teachers?

The beginnings of our construction...blocks of different sizes, dominoes, and cards.  Next week...a city!

Some students still do not have these envelopes for their reading program. They are sturdier than a ziploc bag.  If your child does not come home with one tonight, please consider purchasing one.  Merci.

Friday is dress as a teacher day. We would like to keep our
trophy for the class with the best spirit! Have fun!
Friday is also Library Day, please bring your books back.
And finally, today, we will be starting our At Home Reading
Program. It is expected that your child read at least 3 minutes
each night in French. Every morning they will be responsible for                                                            exchanging their book and returning it the next day. Reading is a
great way to improve your French abilities. Bon lecture!

We are working on vocabulary for clothing at this time in French. I have added the pictures and words so that you can help your child learn.  In Social Studies we are talking about responsibilities, our own and those of others in the different groups we belong to. In Math, we continue to work with numbers to 20. Students should be able to say them forwards, backwards and know which # comes before or after another. Practice makes perfect!

Our next Science unit is all about construction.  Please send materials (empty boxes, plastic caps, styrofoam, metal lids, etc...) that are recyclable so that we can put our minds to work and create some cool stuff.

Don't forget that Tuesday  November 10th is picture retake day and also because I was absent on the first picture day, we will be having a class photo on Tuesday...Wear your best smile!

At home reading will now be a big part of your child's learning. Have them sound out syllables to then make words.  For listening to stories in French please visit the following website for good books.  If a story has a speaker, it is able to be heard.

Subitizing in Math is the ability to recognize numbers quickly without counting them.  To help your child subitize, grab a set of dice and help them learn to recognize the dots without counting. You can also watch the following video to help them with 10 frames recognition.

God has called us each by name.  "Colette" means "Victorious".  What is the meaning of your name?
