We are working on a French center idea called "Les 5 au Quotidien" or in English "The Daily 5" whereby students rotate centers and are asked to work on literature. The above photo is Reading to a Friend. The one to the right is Reading to Self (comfy pillows included)

This is a photo of students working on writing.

The last station "Listening to Reading" is still a work in progress as is "One on One time with the teacher". All of these centers will help your child to become a better reader and also to help them read for comprehension, which will be our next big push from now to the end June.

Math: We are beginning to learn about place value, for example, ones, tens and hundreds. Friday  of this week is our 100th day so we will be counting to 100 several times over.

Science: We are finishing the unit on the 5 senses and an evaluation will be forthcoming this week.

Etudes Sociales: We will be starting our unit on the Past vs the Present. Speak to your child about traditions that you had growing up revolving around holidays so they can compare that with what you do now. Or go one step further and talk to grandparents and their growing up years.

English: We will be looking at the short vowel "u" in words such as "rug, bun, pup" and also I would like to get the students to think about writing a story based on the elements that we previously studied (setting, character, problem, solution).

Health: Evaluation on the 4 food groups this week. They did an awesome job on their coloring of certain foods in each group.

Can I tell you how proud of the students I was after the Ash Wednesday celebration? I was so full of love and admiration and pride for their practicing, their participation, and their respect throughout the whole time. Well done les amis de Mme Colette et de Mme Chantal. xo

Happy Carnaval!
It was great to see students dressed in checkered shirts today. Tomorrow, if possible, they should add a "ceinture fléchée" or a scarf around their waist and Wednesday they are to add a tuque and rubber boots. (I have reservations about that though, as we are in the celebration...maybe a change of clothes??...if you can swing it...nice clothes for the morning and then we can change into lumberjacks for the afternoon activities...if not don't sweat it).
Today in BFG we made marshmallow snowmen and tomorrow we are putting up our banner. This afternoon, we danced and jigged in Français. So much to do...so little time!

French: reading, reading, reading. And speaking, speaking speaking in French! Next week we will have new vocabulary words.
Math: some students are still struggling with + and - and maybe some at home practice is necessary. I will email individuals who still need help.
Science: finishing the 5 senses...funniest part was the taste testing and everyone thought they were getting chocolate but it was 70% pure...can you say run to the fountain! Not many liked the lemon juice either. In french we tasted sucre (sweet), amer (bitter), sale (salty) and acide (tart).
Health: we are finishing  up the 4 basic food groups...evaluation to come.

We are in the midst of practicing for the Ash Wednesday celebration. If you want to play the songs at home, they are "40 days" by Matt Maher and "Create a new heart" by Michael Mangan. Also, the students who have been selected to read, have been given their readings to practice. Please be diligent with this. Merci.
We are in the middle of evaluations as well and I have noticed a clear division between the students who are reading at home every night and those that are not. Reading every night is mandatory and helps with the success of your child. Students will be bringing home sound wheels this week. We may not have learned all of the sounds yet, but at this time, all students need to be decoding (ie: sounding out the letters, syllables and hence words). Regardless of whether this is done in French or English, decoding is the first step to reading.
With the carnaval happening next week, I see a HUGE improvement on students speaking French to each other. It is music to my ears!
Book%20Clip%20ArtLibrary is Friday this week.
Here are the French sight words that I promised last week:

Je      Voici      Elle      Il      dans      porte    et

est      sur     Il y a        C'est       Tu     sous    J'ai

Bon lundi!
So far I have only 2 volunteers for Feb 19th 100th day of school. Please consider spending a morning with us.
Middle Ages Illustration

Upcoming events:
This Friday is spirit day. The theme is medieval.

Our and Mme Chantal's classes are  responsible for the Ash Wednesday celebration on Feb 11th. If you will be here and if  your child wants to read, practicing at home will be a must. Decisions will be made next week.

At the end of February will be in-line skating and we will need volunteers for that also, to help the students tie up their skates and put on equipment.

As you have probably heard, there is a canteen at school now. It is not mandatory that students buy from there, but every once in a while if they want an extra snack, the menu is on the school website. Students are responsible for their money.

Evaluations in Math and Social Studies this week, as well as vocabulary in French on the parts of the body. Also up-coming, an evaluation on writing. I will include a list of frequent words that we have been using, in tomorrow's message.

Library day this Thursday.

Happy Tuesday. I was at the dentist yesterday keeping my teeth in good health, so the Blog is a day late.

To begin with...Calling all Volunteers...
February 19th is going to be our 100th day of school and we will have a special day to commemorate it. Please consider volunteering as we will have several stations, needing several hands. I am giving  you a lot of notice in the hopes that you can help out. Please email me and let me know if you can be of help. Also in this regard, is there anyone who can cut out some glasses for me ahead of time (from cardboard, already traced, just need cutting, can be done at home while watching the Bachelor? Please email me. Merci!

This week is a short week so let's make the most of it!
Français: we are working on the sound "in". Another nasal as in the word "lapin". The "n" is not pronounced. We are also working on sentences, winter activities, and listening to and following instructions.
Math: Continue to practice the numbers up to 100. Find a 100 chart online and have your child name them as they count. Plus keep adding and subtracting things up to 15 (ex: 15 - 8 = ___)
Science: we have an evaluation on construction tomorrow and we are presenting the bedrooms that they built. Practice saying: voici ma chambre...voici mon lit....j'ai construit mon lit avec du carton etc.
Etudes Sociales: we just finished with Urbaine et Rurale. An evaluation is forthcoming. We will begin to discuss how to make the best decision in any given circumstance.
Religion: we will be working with the grade 4 class soon and start a project on the Chrome books on a Saint. This week, we will learn how to log onto the chromebooks (with  Mme Marie-Claude's grade 3 class) and go from there. Students may want to discuss the name of a saint with you, and what makes a person a saint. Students may continue to share their baptismal stories.

This is another call for the "2 stars and a wish" sheet as well as the evaluations that were sent home to be signed and then returned to school. These requests are part of the Health mark and fall under the category of organization. Please check with your child if they are on the list of "to be returned".
We have worked on the sound "oi" (wa) and "eau" "au" (o) last week.  This week we look at the sound "on", as in "cochon".
Math: we will continue to count by 10's up to 100; count by 2's up to 60; and students must know their numbers up to 100. If I ask them to write "cinquante quatre", they need to know to write 54.
Science: we will finish off construction...any boxes coming in? (I have yet to receive any) and we are working on l'hiver/winter. How do we know it is winter.
Religion: we have started talking about baptism. Talk to your child about their baptism; signs and symbols etc.
Are you still reading every night? I only have about 8 students lining up to exchange books every morning...!!!

Welcome to a brand new year of blogging and fun adventures.
Included here are the vocabulary words for the next few weeks.  We are working on parts of the body and learning some new sounds. The latest = "oi" which in French is pronounced "wa".
I have looked at the returned sheets of "Two Stars and a Wish" that students were supposed to return after Parent-Teacher conferences.  There are still a few missing so duplicate sheets will be sent home tonight.

In Math we are learning to count by 10's: for now up to 60
dix      vingt      trente     quarante     cinquante      soixante

In Social Studies we are looking at Canada. Talk to your child about which provinces they have been to.

In Science we are still looking at construction...another box would be needed for the next activity (cereal or cracker size) and we are also talking about the season of winter = l'hiver.
Keep reading every night.
