This week in Learning:

Hope everyone had a fun long weekend. I went to 2 inservices, one artsy and one on writing (how to improve vocabulary and description).

FLA: Hockey Lecture continues and the scores are close. By the end of the week, we will have the teams set for the semi-finals. Quiz on HOMOPHONES that we studied this coming Friday.

We had an amusing afternoon Friday, running in togas, (those without togas had to be slaves and had their legs bound), throwing discus', racing the horses, jumping and throwing the javelins.
Congratulations to the winners of the 2018 Greek Olympics:
                                     Les 11 Olympiens

IMPORTANT:
Parent council has asked the grade 6 class to collect things for our Mardi Gras Basket. Our theme is "Summer Fun". Anything that you can donate would be gratefully accpeted. Think: water guns, balloons, books, coloring, beach towels... So far our box is empty. 😢

This week in learning:
Math: Learning how to use a protractor...3 students still do not have one.

ELA: we will be doing some descriptive paragraphs. This was a fun activity last year. Vocabulary enrichment is the goal.

FLA: continuing Hockey Lecture. Students are enjoying the competition-like style of reading comprehension. In grammar we are looking at the verb tense: imparfait. I have also assigned a book report and all students should be reading their book and a due date is forthcoming.

Social Studies: as I write this, students are busy writing their exam on Ancient Athens. Next up is the Iroquois Confederacy and what we borrowed from them for our democracy.

Religion: We are looking at the United Nations Rights of the child and the 10 commandments this week.

Music: Analyzing a French song

Art : finishing Mardi Gras decorations.

Please read the previous BLOG for important information if you have not already done so. 17 students do not have protractors for the next unit in Math. These are mandatory and essential.

Important information:
Seeing as it is half way through the year, I thought it would be a good idea to do an inventory of supplies so that we are all back on track for the remainder of the year. Please check with  your child if they are missing any of the following:

  • glue
  • scissors
  • markers
  • pencil crayons
  • erasers
  • thesaurus
  • gym strip
  • pencils
  • calculator
  • sheet protectors/sleeves

M. Desrochers has implemented a rule that says no gym-strip...no gym participation. I believe that this is very important as they get older and body odor becomes more prominent, they NEED to change. It has always been a regulation at the school but it has waned in the last little while because so many were not changing.

Cell Phones:
The rule is and has ALWAYS been: you can bring it to school, but it stays on SILENT in the backpack UNLESS you have permission to use it for school related research. If the phone goes off while I am teaching...it's mine until a parent comes to pick it up. If students are caught with it during recess, it's mine until a parent comes to pick it up. This will NOT change. the next step will be to have everyone fork them over at the office when walking into the building. We have had yet another chat about it and I hope never to discuss again. Thank you for your cooperation.

Eating in the hall is a privilege that some grade 6 students are abusing. Last warning...Students who throw food, or who do not sit up against the wall to eat will return to the noisy gym to eat with the other 390+ younger students. This week was the best for remembering rules and regulations. Hopefully some discussions can happen to help make my job a little easier.

Let the Games begin!
When: January 19th Day 4;  1 p.m.
Where: Gymnasium
Who: Grade six students
Why: Fun culmination of Ancient Greece unit
What: modified “Olympic” games wearing                togas and emulating the ancient Greeks.

Happy New Year and Welcome back! Thank you to everyone who was so generous to me at Christmas. I sent a thank you note home...you may or may not get it!
I hope that everyone had a relaxing holiday and that the students are ready to get back to work as we have a lot to cover yet.

This week in Learning:

MATH: we are finishing with decimals this week and the test for the unit will be on Tuesday January 16. If your child is still having troubles multiplying and dividing decimals, they need to come and see me for one on one instruction.

ELA: presenting greek god/goddess research starting Wednesday. Continuing with prefixes and suffixes.

RELIGION: looking at Mary and Joseph and life in Jerusalem at that time.

MUSIC: researching a French singer/song.

ART: galaxies in acrylic paint. Please wear an old shirt on Wednesday.

We went to the Learning Commons today and all students were asked to choose a book to a report on. There is no due date  yet, but wanted to let you know that they should be reading in French every night...they always should have been but now there is an assignment attached to it.!!!!
