My favorite part of Parent Teacher Conferences is when parents tell me that their child goes home and tells them what they are doing and learning in class. It indicates that a connection has been made. Thank you to all the parents who came in person and online or phone to chat. Your support and input into your child's education is appreciated.

This week in learning:

MATH: we are looking at order of operations this week and if you remember the acronym PDMAS you will be successful. Have your child teach it to you.

SC: tire treads left behind at the scene of the crime, what do investigators look at? Possibly looking at fingerprints as well this week.

ES: we begin current events, Students have a schedule whereby they need to watch the news a few days before presenting and tell the class about something in the news with respect to government, any level. We look at why need a govn't and what our constitution is. NOMINATION forms are due Thursday.  Speeches are next week, October 3rd.

FLA: we will begin our reading program this week. Students will be placed in same level groups and do guided reading. This allows me to evaluate the reading level of students individually.

On Google Classroom, I have placed a website to help with grammar and verbs for students to use to improve their writing skills. All types of activities are there and if we are working on one aspect, they can practice at home.

https://www.ortholud.com/exercices_de_grammaire_1_1.html

ELA: we continue with Vermeer. Chapters 9-12 will be assigned.

This week in Learning:

Any time a student is ill, notes will be posted on Google Classroom to the best of my abilities.

Students should have all school supplies to facilitate learning. Parent interview sheets would be appreciated asap to help with PT interviews next week.

MATH: problem solving in French. It is important to read the questions carefully before determining the operation needed. Then we move onto multiples and factors.

SCIENCE: observations are crucial to crime solving. We will also look at footprint impressions and tire treads.

ES: We continue to look at the values of democracy.

FLA: oral presentations are being done this week to get back into the groove of speaking in french.

ELA: we have begun a novel study that looks very closely at Figures of speech. It is called Chasing Vermeer and it is a mystery which goes well with our Science unit. There will be chapters and comprehension questions assigned each night.

Religion: we are preparing for the mass. Some students will be assigned roles, but there are not enough for everyone. All others will be encouraged to be the choir for the congregation.

Welcome to your child's last year at Ecole St Luke. I hope your summer was phenomenal and that everyone is ready and eager to begin learning all they need to for a successful year.
Each week I try my best to update the BLOG on Mondays so that parents and students know what to expect for the week. It is also possible for an update sometime during the week, this is to get students used to checking online. Homework is not placed here, but dates for quizzes and tests are. Students are given one week to prepare for tests and cramming is not encouraged. There will be a detailed letter coming home soon as to my expectations and routines.

This week in learning:
Students should have accepted the invitation to Google classroom by now. Check your Gmail and bookmark this page for easier reference;

MATH: we begin with an evaluation to see what students remember from grade 5. This is just for me to see where I would put emphasis on and what needs more work, less work, review, etc. Then we look at big numbers Module 2. The textbook is accessible through google classroom.

SCIENCE: We begin the year with a unit on Forensics, Crime and evidence. We have a field trip already booked for YOUTHLINK in October and more information will be forthcoming.

ES: this year we study democracy and the beginnings of our Government. The first chapter is on what democracy means. I encourage parents to speak to their children about democracy , how it functions and our role in it. There will be a portion of current events attached to the Social Studies curriculum.

FLA: we begin with a lot of spoken French at this time, having the students turn their brains back on in French. Speaking French in class is my number one rule. I believe the more they speak, the easier their reading is, then comprehension and writing follow suit.

ELA: we are writing a letter to our future selves to be put away until June for our Farewell.

Religion: our class is in charge of the opening mass at the church. We will be going through the liturgy, practicing songs and choosing readers. We are also up first on the intercom for morning prayers, so students need to complete theirs by Friday.

I look forward to working with you this year to make your child's last year at St Luke a memorable one. Students are permitted to email me directly with questions they have about homework.
