Two more weeks until we can finally rest and relax...
Super Huge kudos to the Grade 6 class for their phenomenal performance at the Christmas concert. I was down in front, expecting to direct them, when suddenly...I looked at them and found out they were not looking at me but doing exactly what they were supposed to do...perform! Tears ran down my cheek...so proud of this awesome group! Hope you liked it.
Please consider sending wet wipes...we have several students sick already, and wiping down desks will go a long way to keeping germs at bay.
This week in learning:
Francais: doing a research on Big Foot or another legend, whereby they put their information on a poster. Goes with our novel study.
Math: Studying for the unit test on December 16th. NOW is the time to ask questions about stuff they don't understand.
ELA: finishing research on Greek gods, and goddesses, that we will present to the class in the coming week. Starting to write in a journal to get them into the habit of writing down ideas quickly.
Science: continuing with astronomy. Finished seasons, next up, magnitude gauges, constellations and moon phases. The sheet on Moon phases will be picked up this Thursday.
E.S: finishing up on Ancient Athens. We will have a unit test on December 20th. We will also have Greek games on the afternoon of the 19th. In the past, Mme Ginette made it a greek day, but there were so many problems last year, that I decided against it. We will dress up in togas for the afternoon and have our very own Olympics, but no greek food. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Religion: talking about Advent, how Mary said yes, and life in the first century. We are also busy with our Candy Gram campaign. 50 cents for a candy cane to give to someone who you would not normally give to. The money goes to charity.

Just looked at last week's BLOG...full of mistakes..shame on me for rushing and not looking it over before sending it...practice what I preach much!
A HUGE thank you to Teresa Cowan for organizing the Bake Sale and to the parents for providing goodies to be sold. I do not have a total for the sales as of yet.
Thank you to everyone who came to the interviews. I believe the most important message brought forward, is that students need to read more in French, as it is the foundation for everything else.
This week:
Francais: Imparfait verbs; finishing the novel, with a culminating activity at the end.
ELA: Koudos to the students for their Reader's Theater presentations...nothing but AB and EX. We also presented to the grade one class, our reading buddies, but one group has yet to present. We will be finishing the research projects on greek gods and godesses. The goal of this project was to learn GOOD research skills and making sure they know how to cite books and websites.
Math: Working on equal equations.
Etudes Sociales: Was ancient democracy equal for everyone?
Science: We will look at the magnitude of stars and make a magnitude gauge. Are your children still observing the phases of the moon and writing them down? I will pick those up next week. Also looking at how the sun, the earth and rotations/revolutions give us seasons.
Please have costumes at the school by Tuesday...really looking forward to the concert! We have worked very hard on our performances.

This week in Grade 6:
Francais: continuing to work on "La montagne noire", but are taking a break from the reading so that we can write a letter as one of the characters. With respect to verbs, we are now studying "L'IMPARFAIT", part of the past tense. Students shold know the endings and memorize the most used verbs on thier sheet.
Sciences: I brought in the Star Lab, and even thought the students have been excited about it, I discovered that they did not send the proper cylinder...I am more than disappointed, but we will try to make the most of it. Thursday night of the interviews, barring nice weather, my husband has offered to bring our telescope so that students can have a look at the night sky. If yo are not scheduled for an interview, but want to come by, you are welcome to do so. Students should still be orbserving the moon phases and writing them down on their sheet.
Social Studies: Still studying the Ancient Anthenians and the roles of the women vs men vs slaves.
ELA: finishing and presenting Reader's Theater Wednesday. Also doing a research project on the greek gods so if you hear some weird relationship stuff...consider the source...gods were a little wacky! The important part is learning how to do a good research project.
Religion: Learning about covenants and starting Advent and how we can prepare for Christ's coming.
Health: quiz next Monday on how to study and how to cope with stress.
Math: working on coordinates and how to plot them on a graph. Please sign quiz and send them back in. Next unit, will be on equalities.
Our Christmas concert is around the corner. I have a John Deere cap and am hoping that everyone else is on track to get their costume/outfit together. Eve needs overalls...anyone? Practicing the LAST verse of Leroy is imperative.
LASTLY:
Although it was not on the school supply list, please send in a container of hand wipes as they are often used for clean-ups and wiping desks of their germs. If everyone sent in a container, it should help for the year. Thanks for your help with this.

Galloping (8 times)
Oh! Look at 'em go,
Santa's laughin'.
Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho,
Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner,
Blitzen,
Over the moon so bright
Thirty-two feet and eight little tails of white,
Hurry, hurry, hurry through the night.
Over the moon so bright
Thirty-two feet and eight little tails of white,
Hurry, hurry, hurry through the night.
Ol' Saint Nick he works so quickly leavin' toys for girls
and boys.
Then over the roof so high
Thirty-two feet and eight little tails they fly,
Faster, faster, faster through the sky.

Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner,
Blitzen,
Over the garden wall.
Thirty-two feet and eight little tails in all.
See 'em canter, hear ol' Santa call,
"Merry, merry Christmas to you all."
Over the garden wall.
Thirty-two feet and eight little tails in all.
See 'em canter, hear ol' Santa call,
"Merry, merry Christmas to you all."

galloping galloping go!
Rudolph was under the
weather
He had to call-in sick
So he got on the horn to his cousin, Leroy
Who lived out in the sticks
He said: "Santa's really countin' on me
And I hate to pass the buck."
Leroy said: "Hey, I'm on my way."
And he jumped in his pick-up truck
He had to call-in sick
So he got on the horn to his cousin, Leroy
Who lived out in the sticks
He said: "Santa's really countin' on me
And I hate to pass the buck."
Leroy said: "Hey, I'm on my way."
And he jumped in his pick-up truck
When Leroy got to the
North Pole
All the reindeer snickered and laughed
They'd never seen a deer in overalls
And a John Deere tractor hat
but Santa stepped in and said: "Just calm down
'Cause we've all got a job to do
And like it or not, Leroy's in charge
And he's gonna be leadin' you."

but Santa stepped in and said: "Just calm down
'Cause we've all got a job to do
And like it or not, Leroy's in charge

And it was Leroy, the
redneck reindeer
Hooked to the front of the sleigh
Deliverin' toys to all the good ol' boys
And girls along the way
He's just a down home, party animal
Two-stepping across the sky
He mixed jingle bells with a rebel yell
And made history that night
Hooked to the front of the sleigh
Deliverin' toys to all the good ol' boys
And girls along the way
He's just a down home, party animal
Two-stepping across the sky
He mixed jingle bells with a rebel yell
And made history that night
Before that night was
over
Leroy had changed their tune
He had 'em scootin' a hoof on every single roof
By the light of the neon moon
Santa wrapped his bag with a dixie-flag
He was havin' the time of his life
And you could hear him call
"Merry Christmas to y'all
And to all of y'all a goodnight."

So far this term, 4 tests have gone home to be signed by you and then returned to school. I keep the exams in order to study from them at the end of the year for PAT's. If you have not seen/signed or returned these tests then you may not know how your child is doing in school at this time and a conversation may be required. Thanks for your help and contact me if you need more information.

Science: we are completing our unit on forensics and will have solved our crime by next week...which means...unit test coming up...TBA

Religion: We are made in the image of GOD.
SUPER huge thanks to the grade 6 for their help in collecting 23 huge boxes of food for the St Luke Help the Needy...(and the Verterans food bank...your kids can explain that one!)

A final goodbye...
As I remove all of our decorations and works of art and pack up my things to move forward, I wanted to say a last goodbye...or rather
Au revoir.
I am exhausted, but fulfilled after my first year back to teaching in many years. Your children have definitely kept me young (despite the gray hairs poking through)! I hope their first year of school has made them life-long learners and has given them the desire to do better, to do great things and to have fun while doing all of that.
As you now know, I am jumping a few grades to teach grade 6. My first plan was to stay in grade 1 for another year or two, but I was asked to teach grade 6 because of my background in Jr. high. I am looking forward to new adventures, new challenges and maybe a few minutes to sit during the day ( a luxury not afforded to grade 1 teachers...ask your kids about Mme Colette's magic magnet trick)!
I hope we see each other again in a few years. Remind your children to read in French over the holidays and if it's a rainy day, check out French cartoons on You Tube. This will help them not lose what they have worked so hard for this past year.
With love and Blessings,
Mme Colette

An act of charity...
Anna decided a long time ago that she wanted to grow her hair long enough to be able to cut it and donate it to "Kids for Wigs". When her dad contacted me and asked if she could do it in our class, I was thrilled. It fit perfectly with our theme in Religion of acting more like Jesus and doing works of charity. No big fanfare, no big deal...just a little girl cutting her hair so that other kids with diseases could have have a wig. Here are some pictures of the event.

Happy Monday...
This week:
Tomorrow we will be walking to a park to have a picnic lunch in celebration of our last season...summer. Please send the following with your child:
This afternoon at the end of the day, we will be having a quick presentation on Kids for Cancer. Anna will then be cutting off her ponytail to donate to the cause. It works perfectly with our unit on Charity in Religion.
We finish up our posters/research on our animal. Students will present their habitats to the class today and their posters the rest of the week. I am quite impressed with their work to date.
As a quick reminder: We continue to learn until June 28th. If by any chance you decide to leave for holidays early, you must provide the office with a LARGE self-addressed stamped (2 stamps) envelope for the report card. NO REPORT CARDS WILL GO HOME UNTIL 3:10 ON THE 29TH. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

This week we will be building animal habitats and I would like to start tomorrow. Please bring in materials to construct your habitat. I have the kleenex boxes already. Students may bring in branches, leaves, sticks, rocks or toilet paper rolls to help them build.
The next 2 weeks in learning:
Français: les animaux, les sons
ES: retest for those who did not do so well on Canada
Math: doubles...we learned a rap song today. Have your child try it at home:

Sciences: les animaux, habitats, construction, posters, research
Religion: how to be more like Jesus
Health: we are having some issues with students being unkind to one another, despite having learned how to be a good friend. It would be most helpful for you to chat with your child about being respectful. We may not always like everyone, but we need not treat them unkindly. Thank you for your support in this matter.
ELA: animal poems, using rhyming words

I realize that this week will be difficult for learning, with the warmer weather making it feel like summer. This is evident in some of the evaluations that we have had lately. Some students are acting like school is over and they don't have to put forth any effort. PLEASE remind your children that learning is still a go for the next 3 weeks. That includes reading every night and practicing sounds. I will be emailing individual parents whose children are not yet at grade 1 reading level and asking that more practice be done at home.
We had library today but NOTE that ALL BOOKS are to be returned this FRIDAY JUNE 10th...no exceptions. Thank you for your help in this matter.
This week in learning:
Français: Difficult sounds "gn" "ar" "er" "or" "ir" "ur" plus writing sentences about animals
ES: continuing past and present
Math: continuing word problems and additions of doubles
Science: animals...adaptations, sounds, homes
Health: continuing with friendships
Religion: Preparing for the sacramental celebration on Friday
Please dress accordingly and send a bottle of water...it's going to be a LONG week!

I am a proud teacher of this grade 1 class! What great performances they did for the volunteer tea, the school population AND the other parents. Way to go. And a special thanks to Mme Hader for her teaching us the beat, the dance, the song and the fun!
This week in learning:
Français: evaluations in reading, writing and comprehension.
Social Studies: The future...how things will change
Math: continuing + and - and problem solving.
Science: Summer season changes.
ALSO ... Please have your child choose an animal to research by Friday.
Health: making friends
Religion: Jesus in my life
PLEASE NOTE
Temperature calendars are due Wednesday June 1st. Please return to school.
There are MANY parents who have offered to volunteer for Friday's field trip. Once I have all of the forms, I will choose only 3 parents to come along. Priority will be given to parents who have not yet had the chance to volunteer. HOWEVER, if you have your own Heritage Park pass (or you want to pay your own way) and you wish to come along, you may drive yourselves there and join us inside.

I would just like to clarify why some students are bringing home homework. I give students a lot of time to finish projects or assignments during the week. At the end of the week, they have a "catch up" day to finish their assignements. ONLY after having 2 full weeks of time to finish, do I send them home to be completed. Please ensure that the work is returned to school, as it often counts in evaluation, especially formative evaluation. If your child is constantly having to bring home assignments, a discussion about using class time wisely may be in order. Maybe your child is talking too much, daydreaming too much or not asking enough questions to get the job done. In any event, please keep an eye on this from now until June. MERCI

Here is the song that we will be working on for the volunteer tea, if you want to play it for your kids every once in a while. We will be changing some of the lyrics to french, but they can practice the beat.

We are having a music workshop this week to prepare for the parent volunteer tea. Please be aware that not ALL students will use the djembes. Some will sing and some will dance. We will make it as fair as possible. Thank you for your understanding.
Scholastic orders will be due this Thursday if you would like to order something. You can also go directly online to view the flyers, especially the French flyers.

Montre et racontre this week:
Zoey, Feranmi, Philo, Ruhaan, and Akin.
Here is my little rant and nag for the month of MAY...
I am finding that parents are not signing agendas on a regular basis lately...let's blame both parents and students on this one and get back on track. To that same end, French reading programs are not being done every night. I have started to evaluate the students and some of them are still not getting their basic sounds:
oi au in an eau ch eu etc... and the words they make.
Also, some students still do not have dry erase markers and are frustrated when the ones I have purchased no longer work. Get together with another family and buy a set.
Lastly, you need to phone the school if your child will be absent for appointments, or illness or vacations. this way they pu it into the system and I am not guessing where your child is.
Ok...now the good news...Your children are speaking French! when working on assignments, in groups, at their desks...all I hear (for the most part) is FRENCH...music to my ears. You should be proud too! Keep up the good work.

Yesterday, the students brought home a calendar to record the weather for the month of May, in order to coincide with our Science and what happens in the spring. Every day after school and on the weekends, they are to mark what the weather was like. It is to be returned to school on June 1st. Thank you for your help with this.
I am also happy that several students planted their seeds/plants. If you would like to send a photo of the progress, please email it to me and I will post them on the Blog.
Also sent home yesterday, was a field trip form. We will be having a "behind the scenes" look at the church with Dan D'Agostino, as part of our Religion curriculum. We will be walking to the church and if you would like to volunteer, please email me and I will get back to you. It is for the morning of May 17th.
