Les grands gagnants de Hockey Lecture: TNT
Félicitations...c'était une saison géniale.

Monday, January 28, 2019

This week in Learning:

ELA: finishing poetry. Short quiz will follow next week.

FLA: students were asked to find 30 new words in their daily French reading from the beginning of December to now. Those words are due this Friday. We will have our Hockey Lecture finals this week. TNT will face les Humanaux for a grand prize bag of candy. A comprehension test will follow and hopefully their results will improve from the pre-test.

SCIENCE: continuing to do experiments with air and how it affects things. There is not a lot of homework in this unit but students should be reviewing notes every night.

MATH: we have begun fractions, both improper and mixed. Students should be very familiar with drawing them and telling me what the fraction is that I draw. They should also be able to revert to either form, given one form. ie: improper to mixed and vice versa.

SOCIAL: the use of the Wampum, and how the Iroquois governed themselves.

RELIGION: students were asked to depict a Beatitude.

IMPORTANT this week:
SCIENCE fair Friday. Students who are participating will be responsable to catch up on anything they miss in class. A huge thanks to Kristina Hansen for once again organizing this worthwhile project.

This week in Learning:

Math: test today. This week we will begin our unit on fractions, proportions and percentages.

ELA: Poetry continues. Those students who are writing new lyrics to an old song, should have sent me their work in progress.

FLA: Hockey Lecture continues. Semi-finals will begin this week and I expect Finals next week. After the finals we will have a post test to see if there are improvements in their reading strategies.

SOCIAL: We didn't get to the Wampum last week, so that is on the agenda, as well as how they made decisions.  This is a short unit so expect a test in the next few weeks. I have booked Tpet for Feb 26th as a summary on this unit. It is an in-school field trip and I will be needing volunteers. More information to come.

Science: we continue with experiments on air. Students could be looking on-line for some of their own to see how air works and why it is so forceful.  Did anyone see the Blood moon ecliipse last night? I saw a bit of it at 9h30, but it was rather cloudy.

RELIGION: We look at the Beatitudes and how they teach us to live.

IMPORTANT: Dragon's Den tomorrow am in the room across from the office. Several parent council members will there to hear your children pitch their product.
NO school on Friday.

Our acrostic poem:

This week in Learning:

FLA: we continue with Hockey Lecture. The first match was a big success. In grammar, we will be looking at homophones.

ELA: We will continue with poetry, but for some classes, I want to give the students the time to prepare themselves for the Dragon's Den next week as well.

Social: How the Iroquois society was organized, the long house, the roles of women and of men, the Wampum.

SCIENCE: experiments using air...how do we know it is there, how does it act, what can it do.

ART: spirit animals

MATH: finishing the unit on Angles. Test will be next Monday January 21st.

RELIGION: test this Thursday on  Moses, Commandments, Advent and the UN rights of the child.

Pizza Day and Ugly Sweater day this Thursday

Wednesday, January 9, 2019

Welcome back! I must still be on holiday time due to the lateness of this weekly...

This week in Learning:
FLA: we are beginnning Hockey Lecture, a reading comprehension program that involves competition as well as reading for comprehension. It has been very successful in the past as our st Luke students had the best French reading comprehension score in immersion for the PAT's last year. Yesterday we had a pretest and at the end of the round robin we will have a post-test to see if the students improved their reading strategies. (I am in the throws of correcting our novel study project and some students have yet to hand it in...Are you one of them?)

ELA: As soon as we finish telling our constellation stories, we will begin a unit in poetry. this is to help students with their descriptive writing skills and imaginative creativity.

MATH: we will continue to work on angles and then move onto the sum of angles in a triangle and polygone. Students should be quite familiar with using a protractor now, as I have sat down with each of them to ensure they get it.

SOCIAL: today we begin The Iroquois Confederacy and look at how their government influenced ours. At the end of this unit, I will book a Teacher's Pet in-school field trip and will need volunteers. Details to come.

RELIGION:
There will be a quiz on the 10 commandments, Moses' life story, Advent and the UN rights of the child next week. Date TBA once we finish the rights of the child portion.

ART: Spirit animals focusing on line or shape

SCIENCE: we are finishing our presentations on planets today. Next up is Air and Aerodynamics. These 2 units are taught in tandem and students could spend time reading up on these subjects on their own time for a more solid understanding. The concepts can be difficult for some so sometimes reading about them in English helps, and then focus on French vocab.

Coming soon:
A "Dragon's Den" day with parent council to secure money for the students' businesses. So far, I am quite impressed with the knowledge and progress made.
